QUARTZ-4 Paraphonic Synthesizer

Big pile of parts

At a certain point I aquired a large amount of electronic parts previously beloning to another Synth DIY enthousiast. This batch included CEM ic’s, lots of other usefull analogue and digital ic’s, switches, LED’s, resistors, capacitors and much more. This inspired my to maky my own version of the vintage Korg Mono/Poly synthesizer. By aquiring this batch, I had most of the parts needed to build it.

4-Voice paraphonic

Just like the Mono/Poly, the QUARTZ-4 is a 4 oscillator paraphonic synthesizer. But it greatly expands upon the old vintage unit. First of all, the keyboard has velocity and aftertouch and the synth can be controlled via MIDI. Instead of a single lowpass filter, the QUARTZ-4 features a multimode OTA based filter with lowpass, bandpass and highpass modes. The signal path ends with a stereo panner.

Expanded capabilities

The QUARTZ-4 has a flexible modulation system starting with 2 multi waveform LFO’s going up into the audio frequency range. The speed of the LFO’s can be modulated. There is a Sample and Hold section with selectable input and clock sources. Of course there is PWM and the Effects section adds sync and FM options. The Master Control section adds different key modes (mono, dual, poly and chord) and a flexible arpeggiator.

User manual

I’ve written a user manual which describes the operation in full detail. You can download it here:
