Convocto 8-channel MIDI to CV Converter

Polyphonic Modular Synthesizer

This project started when an friend set out to build an 8 voice polyphonic modular synthesizer using Eurorack modules, which could be controlled via a standard MIDI keyboard. As no suitable and commercially available MIDI to CV controller could be found, I was asked to design and build one. This was to become the CONVOCTO 8 channel MIDI to CV Converter.

8 Individual channels

The Convocto provides 8 completely independent CV channels, each with it’s own 1V/OCT Pitch CV output, a +5V Gate output and a configurable Velocity CV output. In addition it has 2 dedicated CV outputs for Modwheel and Aftertouch and 4 assignable outputs, which can be used for a variety of signals, such as the internal LFO. Each channel also has a Gate LED indicator. The 8 channels can be combined in different ways for monophonic, duophonic, 4 voice polyphonic and 8 voice polyphonic setups. Channels can be assigned to one of two layers which can be split across the keyboard.

Extra goodies

There is a built in Arpeggiator and portamento, which can be enabled or disabled for each channel. The internal memory provides 31 location for storing your own custom setups. Everything is assembled into a 48 HP Eurorack module. And there a built in LFO, which can be used for pitch vibrato and can be sent to the assignable outputs as an additional CV signal.

Resources

I’ve written a user manual which describes the operation in full detail. It includes a full list of all the parameters. You can download it here:
